Chivas game USA (pronounced CHEE-vahs) is an American professional soccer team based in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson City, California. The club played in Major League Soccer (MLS) from 2005 to 2014 and is a subsidiary of Mexican club C.D. It shares common ownership and branding with Guadalajara.

The club was the eleventh MLS team when it entered the league in 2004. Chivas game USA is seen as a "little brother" to parent club C.D. It is one of the most widely supported and successful groups in Guadalajara, Mexico. Chiva is the Latin American Spanish for "female goat", which is seen as a tough and resilient animal in Mexico and nicknamed C.D. Guadalajara.

Chivas game USA plays its home games at the StubHub Center in Carson, which it shares with its rival, the LA Galaxy. The club was originally owned by Antonio Qiu and Jorge Vergara, who were C.D. Guadalajara. In 2014, MLS purchased the club from Vergara with plans to sell it to the new owner.

The club ceased operations after the 2014 regular season and is currently the most recent major professional North American sports team to fold.

History of Chivas

Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara took ownership of struggling Chivas de Guadalajara in 2002 and set about using the revitalized club to establish an international brand. The team named "Chivas game USA" will be affiliated with Chivas and will play in either Los Angeles or San Diego at the start of the 2005 season, and a bid from Houston is also being consideredOn August 2, 2004, Major League Soccer announced that Chivas USA would share Carson's Home Depot Center with the Galaxy and begin playing with them as the league's eleventh team in 2005.

Chivas success (2005–2009)

In 2005, Chivas USA made its debut in Major League Soccer at the Home Depot Center on April 2, 2005, losing 2–0 to then-MLS Cup champion D.C. United under the direction of Chivas game USA's first head coach, Thomas Rongen. After a 1–8–1 start Thomas Rongen was named Chivas USA's sporting director and assistant coach Javier Ledesma became the club's interim head coach. On June 3, 2005, Hans Westerhoff was named the second head coach of Chivas USA. After a disappointing season, Westerhoff did not return to coach the team in 2006 due to this disappointing season.

The 2006 season saw a big change for Chivas USA. The team finished the 2006 season with a 10–9–13 record and managed to earn a spot in the Western Conference playoffs. After the game, Coach Bradley was named interim head coach of the US Men's National Soccer Team and head coach of the US Men's Olympic Soccer Team by the US Soccer Federation, and was replaced by Chivas USA's fourth head coach, Predrag "Preky" Radosavlje.

Sacha Kljestan played a key role for Chivas game USA from 2006 to 2010.

The team's third season under Prekey was one of its most successful years. Chivas game USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2007 season and started the program.On November 7, 2007, Prickly was named MLS Coach of the Year after the first-year manager led the Red-and-White to a 15–7–8 record and first place in Major League Soccer's Western Conference, and was named coach of the year. is given In January 2008, Preki signed a multi-year contract with Chivas game USA and confirmed his position as head coach for 2008. In the 2008 Chivas game USA played Pachuca in their first official international tournament. The Red-and-Whites earned a playoff berth for the third consecutive season after losing to Real Salt Lake in the first round. Kljestan scored the US Soccer Goal of the Year while playing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  He was named US Soccer's Young Male Athlete of the Year.

Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan competed with the US national team at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. Chivas game USA announced Team Award Winners and recognized Thornton as the team's most valuable player. Thornton was also named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and MLS Comeback Player of the Year.

Chivas Club struggles (2010–2013)

Martin Vasquez served as assistant coach from 2005 to 2007. He then appointed Martin Vasquez as the head coach of the team. Kljestan signed a contract with Belgian club Anderlecht during the World Cup break. Bornstein played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, starting two matches for the United States as they advanced to the round of 16. Then on October 27, team head coach Martin Vasquez was released from his contract. On November 2, President and CEO Sean Hunter announced that he would step down and he resigned. On 14 December, the club's vice president of soccer operations, Stephen Hamilton, revealed that he was also stepping down, and he did the same. After Hamilton resigned, José El Domén was appointed as interim general manager, and on January 4, 2011, Robin Fraser was named head coach of Chivas game USA.

Final season (2014)

On February 20, 2014, Major League Soccer purchased Chivas game USA from Vergara. They announced plans to sell to a buyer committed to keeping the club in Los Angeles, as well as rebranding the club in time for the 2015 MLS season. ESPN reported on September 29, 2014 that the club would suspend operations at the end of the MLS regular season until further notice.

On September 30, 2014, Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl reported. It said a group of investors led by Henry Nguyen, Los Angeles Dodgers investor Peter Guber and Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan had agreed to buy the club for more than $100 million. Chivas game USA ceased all operations on October 27, 2014, with its player development academy operated by MLS until June 2015. The league added two teams (New York City FC and Orlando City SC) to increase the total from 19 to 20, moving the Kansas City and Houston conferences to the Western Conference to balance. Chivas club Impact on Major League Soccer

Initially, the decision to drop the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Uprising was designed to cut costs, reducing the league from 12 to 10. Once the Florida teams disbanded in 2002, it was taken as a sign that Major League Soccer was struggling, largely because of its clubs' inability to find ownership. At the time, there were only three owners in the entire league. League Commissioner Don Gerber said "I know many people out there think this is the end of Major League Soccer, and that couldn't be further from the truth. We have not found an economically feasible solution at this time, and we hope to return to the state of Florida when the league expands in future years. However, despite the lack of confidence in the league, cost-cutting measures were effective and the league eventually began to attract more local ownership groups. In 2015, Orlando City SC brought MLS back to Florida, followed by Inter Miami CF in 2020.

After Chivas game USA folded, its successor, Los Angeles FC, was expected to begin play in 2017 but has yet to build its own stadium (Chivas game USA has shared a stadium with the Los Angeles Galaxy throughout its existence). Due to the location chosen for the Los Angeles stadium, it was announced that the new team would push back its first season until 2018.

Chivas have developed two of their most important rivalries over the years. Perhaps its most intense rivalry is with Mexico City-based Club America, as evident by their behavior. Their meeting, known as El Super Clasico, is played at least twice a year and signals a national derby.
